How many jewelry makers, who also sell their jewelry, have gone through the process of becoming an LLC or official business?  Do you have to do this if you only sell online?  I'm just starting out and have not sold anything yet.  Should I wait for a sale to come along before I register a company name ... I don't know what to do.  It's not a full time job for me, so I don't want to be totally consumed by all the paperwork and taxes that come along with the official business.  What is everyone else doing?

Hi Susie,

We're in the same boat. Jewelry always been my passion and after some of google research, the easy way you can sell online and use paypal for the payment. I did one time sell my collection of jewelry by T/T payment but it's a risk when you don't know the buyer. In my case I use T/T coz i've known the buyer.

However, if you decide to sell online, I can recommend you a nice place to start: StoreBeez.com which is a virtual mall focused on helping small businesses and artisans to take their offline business online by providing them with a free online store and free advertising.

You will only have to register for free here StoreBeez.com, list your products, and start accepting PayPal payments Smiley in exchange for a 10% transaction fee on the final sale price.

I think it would be best to actually come up with a business plan. It sounds as though you are very uncertain as to what to do. It is not easy to sell online and there are MANY factors that play in actually selling product. Just because you have a website, doesn't mean people will know it's there, well except for friends and family of course. I would not be overly concerned with having legal issues right now at this point and especially if you do not want to be consumed with this work. Do the basics, tax ID#, register your name maybe...Then at the end of the first year talk with your tax preparer, or talk to him/her now if you are worried. As for actually selling product and spreading your name around to make sales, marketing yourself. I would look up SEO (search engine optimization), do research on people that are high in the market already, social networks, current/user friendly website, etc. etc. So much to do...good luck to you and your journey!

I think it's wise to make sure all the legal/tax stuff is covered straight away - easier to get the right paperwork done to start with rather than waiting for the tax man to find you... as others have suggested I would say google is a good place to start looking at online marketing.

Get start to sell online first, and then to have a company if you many orders. Selling online cost you less before you don't know which style jewelry will sell well.

I think it's a great start to sell online, it's hassle free yet worth-working. You only have to focus on it and give time on how you market your online jewelry store.. hope this helps.
